What is "Business Casual"?

Dear Mel,

My agency allows us to dress business casual as long as we look presentable. However, last week my colleague came in wearing a t-shirt with profanity on it and her slacks were wrinkled. I know upper management spoke with her, but what are your thoughts on proper office wear?

Sincerely, Dress to Impress

Dear Dress to Impress,

Thanks for reaching out! It’s great that your agency allows a business casual dress code, as it offers some flexibility while maintaining professionalism. However, with that flexibility comes the responsibility to balance comfort with appropriateness.

Your colleague’s choice to wear a t-shirt with profanity and wrinkled slacks is definitely pushing the boundaries of business casual, and, understandably, management addressed it. When it comes to office wear, it’s always important to keep in mind that how we present ourselves at work can impact how we’re perceived by both our colleagues and clients.

Here are my thoughts on maintaining the balance between comfort and professionalism in a business casual environment:

Avoid Offensive or Inappropriate Graphics

T-shirts with profanity or inappropriate images should be off-limits in any workplace. It’s crucial to respect the company culture and the people around you. Even in a casual setting, professionalism matters. Clothing choices can affect how others view your commitment and attitude toward your role.

Wrinkle-Free is Key

Presentation is everything, and wrinkled clothing sends a message of carelessness. Even when dressing casually, taking a few extra minutes to iron your clothes or choosing wrinkle-free fabrics can make a big difference in your overall appearance. It shows attention to detail, which reflects well on your work ethic.

Stay True to the Dress Code

Business casual means different things in different workplaces, but as a general rule, it means polished but comfortable. For women, it might include blouses, slacks, and modest dresses. For men, collared shirts, khakis, or chinos work well. Footwear should also be clean and appropriate for the office.

Understand the Power of Perception

How you dress can influence how others perceive you. Dressing presentably, even in a business casual environment, communicates that you take your role seriously and are respectful of the company’s values. This doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice personal style or comfort, but staying mindful of the message your attire sends is key.

Maintain a Professional Attitude

Remember that clothing choices are part of your professional image. Even in a relaxed dress code, you want to look like you’re ready to represent your agency. After all, you never know when you might need to meet with clients, senior leadership, or other stakeholders.

It sounds like your agency trusts employees to make the right judgment calls when it comes to attire. While your colleague’s wardrobe choice may have been inappropriate, the fact that management stepped in is a good sign that they value a professional environment. As long as you continue to dress to impress, you’ll stand out for the right reasons!

Sincerely,

Mel
