Good morning, and welcome to Mental Health Monday with Dr. K!
Today we are going to chat about something that has hit very close to home recently: unexpected loss. Last week, it was announced that my beloved Alma Mater, Wells College, will be closing her doors this month. This announcement was a shocking gut punch that I - and many other alums - are still reeling from.
Loss is a natural part of life, but when it strikes suddenly and without warning, it can feel like the ground beneath us has been pulled away. Even when it is a loss we are expecting, the actual moment of separation can be shattering.
Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a job, a relationship, or even a sense of security, unexpected losses can leave us feeling overwhelmed, confused, and utterly devastated. However, amidst the pain and chaos, it's crucial to remember that healing is possible, and there are steps we can take to navigate this difficult journey.
Here are some strategies to help you cope with unexpected losses:
1. Allow Yourself to Grieve: It's okay to feel a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, confusion, and even numbness. Allow yourself to experience these feelings without judgment or guilt. Grieving is a natural process, and it's essential to give yourself the time and space you need to mourn your loss.
2. Reach Out for Support: You don't have to go through this alone. Lean on friends, family members, or a support group for comfort and guidance. Talking about your feelings with others who care about you can provide immense relief and help you feel less isolated.
3. Take Care of Yourself: In times of crisis, self-care is more important than ever. Make sure to prioritize your physical and emotional well-being by eating healthily, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and comfort.
4. Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling to cope with your loss, don't hesitate to seek professional help. A therapist or counselor can provide you with the tools and support you need to navigate this challenging time and work through your grief in a healthy way.
5. Find Meaning and Purpose: While it may be difficult to see it now, unexpected losses can often lead to personal growth and transformation. Look for ways to find meaning and purpose in your experience, whether it's through helping others, pursuing a new passion, or finding solace in spirituality or mindfulness practices.
Remember, healing from unexpected losses takes time, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to move through the process at your own pace.
If you ever need someone to talk to or support, know that we're here for you.
You are not alone in your journey towards healing.
XOXO,
Dr. Kristy Lee
