Sitting in an office, seeking help with childcare, I heard my 2-year-old daughter's innocent voice recounting a night of terror to a policeman. Nonchalantly, she mentioned her father's violent acts against me. In that moment, my heart shattered. I realized I was inadvertently normalizing abuse for her.
It hit me—this wasn’t just about me anymore. I was shaping her perception of what was acceptable in relationships. That moment ignited a fire within me. It wasn’t merely about my survival; it was about breaking the cycle for my daughter’s future.
Enough was enough. No more excuses, no more surrendering my power. This fight ceased to be solely about me—it was for the well-being and safety of my daughter.
I refused to let her believe that abuse was normal or permissible. The power he held over me was extinguished in that instance. My resolve was unwavering, fueled by a mother's love and determination to shield her child from harm.
Now, my battle is for her. It's about teaching her that respect, kindness, and safety are non-negotiables in any relationship. And in doing so, I found a strength I never knew existed.
