Dear Mel: Dealing with Changes at Work

Dear Mel,

I recently discovered my organization is doing away with remote work. During the pandemic working from home seemed like the best option. However, starting in January 2025 my colleagues and I are told we are expected to work in the office daily. What advice would you offer?

Warm regards,

I love my home office.

Dear I love my home office,

So, you've got some news: your organization is ditching remote work in favor of a full-time in-office setup. This might feel like a bit of a shock, especially if you've grown accustomed to the flexibility and comfort of your home office. Let's explore some strategies to make this transition smoother.

*Embrace the Change

First and foremost, it's important to accept the change. While it might not be your ideal situation, resisting it will only make the transition more difficult. Try to focus on the positive aspects of returning to the office, such as increased social interaction and potential for in-person collaboration.

*Prepare Your Workspace

If you're returning to a shared office space, take the time to personalize it. Bring in items that make you feel comfortable and productive, like a favorite mug, a plant, or a photo. This can help you feel more at home in your new environment.

*Establish a Routine

A consistent daily routine can help you adjust to the shift from home to office. Set specific times for your commute, work hours, and breaks. This will help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.

*Communicate with Your Team

Open and honest communication with your colleagues can make the transition easier. Discuss any concerns or challenges you're facing and seek support from your team.

*Prioritize Self-Care

The transition to in-office work can be stressful. Make sure to prioritize self-care activities like exercise, meditation, or spending time in nature. These can help you manage stress and maintain your mental health.

Remember, change can be difficult, but with the right approach, you can adapt and thrive in your new in-office environment.

Best,

Mel
